The company has a new Chinese-style project involving batch reactions in reactors. The feed for each reactor consists of 3 tons of water and 2 tons of benzyl chloride (monochlorotoluene), which react at a temperature of 120 degrees Celsius. During the reaction, water evaporates, and part of the benzyl chloride as well (with a boiling point of 179 degrees Celsius) will boil off as well. It is necessary to cool these substances using a heat exchanger before returning them to the reactor; the cooling water has a temperature of 25 degrees Celsius and a pressure of 0.5 MPa. Since benzyl chloride is subject to both chloride ion corrosion and the good solvating properties of benzene derivatives, I consulted the process team earlier, and they recommended using a graphite heat exchanger (one that has not been used before). 1.
