On the clearance between the balance drum and the balance seat of multi-stage pumps

I would like to ask what is the typical clearance between the balance drum and the balance housing? The single-sided clearance of this multi-stage pump I have now is 1.3 mm – is that appropriate? Based on the recent maintenance checks, the mechanical seal on the inlet side is showing significant wear, and the thrust bearings are also heavily worn. The lubricating oil tends to turn black, which suggests that the axial force is too high; it seems that the clearance is too large. So, what should this clearance be set at? Are there any standards?
Is this 1.3Mm on one side the gap between the balance drum and the balance sleeve? If so, it’s definitely too large; generally, the gap should be between 0.4-0.5. It can be increased slightly if the temperature of the medium is high
