The flange features a mortise-and-tenon sealing structure made of 316L material; the medium used is 5% boric acid, the pressure is 42 MPa, and the temperature is around 200°C. Currently, oval metal ring gaskets are being used, but leaks are occurring. Is there an issue with the material chosen for these gaskets?
There are many reasons for the leakage, and it is difficult to determine directly.
Are you under so much pressure? 42 MPa is equivalent to 420 kilograms – most gaskets cannot withstand such pressure. Any issues with the installation process or the flange surfaces will also lead to problems.
This post was last edited by xlxuiin on 2019-1-11 08:42. For the groove TG sealing surface, basic type wound gaskets or toothed composite gaskets should be used, while metal ring gaskets are employed for the ring connection surface RJ.
Flange connections are designed through calculations, and the cause of leakage is not necessarily related to the gaskets. How long has your equipment been in use before leakage occurred?
If this type of gasket was originally used in the design, it is usually due to misalignment in the tightening of the flange bolts, resulting in non-parallel cross-sections.
If it leaks from the start, it may be due to uneven flange alignment or inconsistent bolt tightening. Leakage after use for some time may be due to a problem with the gasket. With a pressure of 42 MPa, ordinary gaskets definitely won’t work.
What type of flange do you use? The fundamental reason for deciding whether there will be a leak is that using a metal elliptical gasket as the sealing surface in the groove is incorrect (is it a typo?) )! 42MPA is not a problem for many gaskets. Do the pressure and temperature fluctuate? If disc springs should be installed, is fixed-torque tightening used in the absence of a flange?
