Does a glass-lined reactor have to be scrapped entirely if it suffers even the slightest damage? It can be repaired on-site, by slip-casting on site, or by sending it back to the factory for re-slip-casting. Why is it so rare to see repairs done? Why are new units replaced as soon as there’s even a slight damage?

Tantalum pins are not allowed for repair on sealing surfaces and areas that affect equipment operation. Reactor vessels made of glass-lined steel generally require a high level of product purity; if they get damaged, they are replaced promptly. Losing one batch of material costs as much as buying several new reactors, which is not worth it. If high purity of the product is not a requirement, a carbon steel reactor would be a suitable choice. Many small chemical plants treat their reaction vessels with extreme carelessness; the condition of such equipment is very poor, and it is recommended to replace them as soon as possible.
It depends on which manufacturer the reactor is from; some high-end brand reactors are very expensive, and minor defects can be repaired using tantalum material. Except for those from small factories that are very cheap.
There is a break in the enamel layer, and corrosive substances can very likely penetrate through that break and corrode the underlying material. The problem is that you have no idea when the break occurred, which means you also don’t know to what extent the underlying material has been corroded. Therefore, for safety reasons and cost considerations, many users simply replace them with new ones.
Common 5000/6300 reaction vessels cost tens of thousands of dollars each; a refill costs several thousand dollars, and it’s not certain that the vessel will remain functional for long. There are also safety risks associated with vessels that hold materials worth tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of dollars
The reason for discontinuation is that most standard reactors are used in the domestic market, allowing for direct replacement with spare reactors at relatively low costs. However, high-end suppliers provide custom-made reactors, which have a long procurement cycle and correspondingly higher prices, resulting in significant losses due to production shutdowns. Depending on the nature of the damage and its size and location, it can be repaired; it is not necessarily necessary to replace it with a new one.
If the equipment for composite panels is available, it’s best to composite the panels entirely, as there are hardly any problems in that case.
