We are conducting welding procedure qualification; in order to meet the coverage requirements specified in standard 47014 based on the thickness, yet also to reduce procurement costs, is it possible to process the thick plate to a thinner thickness suitable for making the specimens? I would appreciate advice from experts in this field.
In our company, it is generally accepted that the specification of 5mm for Q345R does not exist; 8mm steel is used instead. I don’t think other specifications will work
It’s better not to do this; a weld evaluation requires the inclusion of a certificate stating the material composition of the steel plate. Weld evaluations must be conducted for plates that have been processed using thick-plate machinery, and it’s difficult to determine the actual thickness in such cases
Thick steel plates can be planed into thin ones for welding evaluation. The material used is thick steel plate. But it can’t be planed too much. For example, it’s fine to use a plane with a 10mm blade to cut something to 8mm, but people won’t believe it if you use a plane with a 50mm blade to do the same.
I have done this before, but I need to indicate in the notes that a 8mm plate was processed to 5mm.

Yes, it was stated in previous official responses from the General Administration for Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine that thick plates can be reduced in thickness to become thin plates, with the thickness in this case being that of a thin plate
