Hello, guys. I have a question I’d like to ask you all. Specifically: If I need to scale up a small device as a whole, is it sufficient to simply multiply the key dimensions of this device by the corresponding factor? For example, if the inner diameter of the original cylinder is 600 and its height is 950, scaling it up by 1.66 results in an inner diameter of 1000 and a height of 1577. However, the cylinder flange is a non-standard part; if the flange is enlarged, should the dimensions that can be marked on it also be increased by a factor of 1.66? This kind of scaling is common in manufacturing units; those who want to increase production capacity are reluctant to invest money in process system design; Simply put, the volume can be increased; the flow rate at the pipe outlet requires calculation, and the strength of each component must also be evaluated.

The design of custom equipment requires a balance among functionality, safety, and cost-effectiveness; first and foremost, the equipment must fulfill its functions within the process system. Issues such as the flow rate of the process medium within the equipment and pipelines, the equipment’s storage capacity, and the separation space available within the equipment all need to be determined based on the process operating conditions. In the case of reaction vessels or columns, factors such as the space velocity inside the equipment also need to be taken into account; therefore, equipment cannot be simply scaled up in a proportional manner.
