This post dates back almost a decade; I’m curious to know how the TOFD testing technology has developed in recent years Can it replace RT?
It is now widely used in thick-walled vessels (such as those with a thickness greater than 26 mm), but based on the current situation, it cannot replace RT.

According to 8.6.1.3 of GB/T12337-2014, radiographic testing should be preferentially used for the butt-welded joints of austenitic steel spherical tanks, while diffraction time-of-flight ultrasonic testing is the preferred method for spherical tanks made of other materials. I’m not sure if this falls under the situation mentioned by the original poster. For an explanation of the selection method, please refer to the standard definition.
