I’m facing a problem in the current design: to achieve effective oil-water separation, the process supplier requires the installation of a coalescer section (with a thickness of 600 mm) in the reflux tank (DN2000), using glass fiber coalescing material. However, when attempting to procure this component, the coalescer manufacturer stated that it is not possible to design such a unit. What type of coalescer is generally used in reflux tanks? Can a wire mesh defoamer (150 mm thick) be used as a substitute?

Our reflux tank has a diameter of DN2200 (horizontal type). The collector is installed in the liquid inside the reflux tank, primarily to improve the oil-water separation effect. Some manufacturers of collectors state that such collectors must be manufactured as a single unit and cannot be assembled like wire mesh demisters; as a result, once the collector is completed, it cannot be inserted into the reflux tank through the manhole (DN500).

You mean a coalescer, not an aggregator. A thickness of 600 mm is achievable, and it can also be made from fiberglass material. The separation principle of a demister is essentially similar to this, but the specific selection varies. Is the reflux tank horizontal or vertical? What is the installation location of the coalescer? If data on the medium flow rate and viscosity are available, the design can be carried out based on requirements regarding separation efficiency and pressure drop.
