A jib is a large column used in lifting operations; it works together with winches, pulley systems, and steel cables to lift objects weighing hundreds of tons right at the location where they are needed. The column body is made of angle steel; those with gaps are called grid-type, while those made entirely of steel plates in a fully enclosed structure are solid-web type. The pole holder is the one shown in the illustration; the one with a single pole is called a single pole holder. The styrene dehydrogenation reactor in our plant is lifted using jacks. It’s been almost 20 years. At that time, large-tonnage cranes were rare, expensive, and the road conditions at the site were not good either. After comprehensive analysis, a jib lifting solution was adopted. The lifting team determined several points at the site where jacks, cranes, and towing mechanisms would be placed; the steel cables were connected in series, and all parties worked together under the supervision of the team leader. It seems very professional, and one must have extensive experience. It’s estimated that there are few professional boom lift teams like this these days. A jacking pole involves selecting a lifting point based on the site conditions, which is a different concept from installing lifting lugs on the tower.
