Where should one start if they want to learn pressure vessel design on their own? What basic knowledge needs to be learned? What are the commonly used design software?
Learn the standard first! Mechanics of Materials, Metallurgy!
You can start by looking at Li Shiyu’s training course on pressure vessel engineering – it’s the book used for both exams and assessments, and it’s very comprehensive. But to be honest, generally one starts working first and gradually gets familiar with the standards through that work. One first reads the standard tutorials to get a basic understanding; usually, not much can be remembered after reading them. It’s just like when we train new employees in the company – after the lectures, they all look confused, and they still make mistakes in actual work; it takes time to accumulate knowledge over time. The commonly used design software is SW6 for central stations, which is used more frequently; PVDESKTOP is used by fewer organizations. They are more or less similar to each other, and CAD is generally sufficient for drawing diagrams.
First, get familiar with the equipment, then learn the *standards, and subsequently use other design drawings for simulation design. The key is to have someone take good care of it for a while.
If there are existing equipment drawings and specifications available, one can redesign it on their own and compare it with the original design. It can also be used to review the drawings.
