The IP (INGRESS PROTECTION) rating system was developed by the IEC (INTERNATIONAL ELECTROTECHNICAL COMMISSION) to classify electrical devices based on their resistance to dust and moisture. The IP protection rating is composed of two digits. The first digit indicates the level of protection against dust and the intrusion of foreign objects (whereby such objects include tools; people’s fingers must not come into contact with the live parts of the electrical appliance to avoid electric shock). The second digit shows the degree of protection against moisture and water intrusion; the higher the number, the greater the level of protection. Level 3 prevents water sprayed from penetrating the appliance; it protects against water sprayed from angles less than 60 degrees relative to the vertical direction. Level 4 prevents water splashing from penetrating the appliance; it stops water splashing from any direction from causing damage. Level 5 prevents water jets from penetrating the appliance; it protects against low-pressure water jets lasting at least 3 minutes. Level 6 prevents heavy water flow from penetrating the appliance; it protects against intense water flow lasting at least 3 minutes. Level 7 prevents water from penetrating the appliance when submerged; it allows the appliance to remain functional even when submerged up to 1 meter deep for 30 minutes. Level 8 prevents water from penetrating the appliance when completely submerged; it ensures the appliance remains functional even when submerged at depths greater than 1 meter.
