Type A welds refer to the longitudinal butt welds in the pressurized portions of vessels (except for the longitudinal seams between layers in multi-layer wrapped vessels). Additionally, they include all splice welds on various convex heads, the circumferential welds connecting spherical heads to cylinders, as well as the butt welds between embedded nozzles (meaning forgings at the nozzle locations) and the cylinder or head. Class B welds refer to the circumferential butt welds in the pressurized parts of containers, as well as the butt welds at the junction of the small end of conical heads with nozzles (with the exception of those welds that can be explicitly classified as Class A, C, or D). Class C welds are the welds that connect the pressure-bearing components of a vessel, such as flanges, end caps, and tube sheets, to the shell or to nozzles; the lap fillet welds between the inner end cap and the cylinder; and the longitudinal welds in multi-layer wrapped vessel shells. Class D welds refer to the welds that connect components such as nozzles, manholes, and flanges to the shell; the connection between these inserted compressive components and the shell is generally a fillet weld (except for those welds designated as Class A or Class B).
