During the hydrostatic testing of pressure vessels, we sometimes hear noises similar to explosions inside certain vessels; there is no overpressure, and the vessels show no visible deformation. Please ask the teacher to help analyze it. Thank you.
There are generally two reasons for abnormal noises: one is cracking in certain parts of the container; First is the composite cylinder structure with multiple layers of wrapping and nesting; during the pressure increase process, deformation causes the metals between the layers to rub against each other and shift, resulting in noise. The latter does not belong to abnormal noises. For single-layer rolled-welded and forged-welded vessels, if abnormal noises are heard during testing, the pressure should be reduced immediately. Acoustic emission can be used to detect the noises generated during the pressure testing of containers with modular cylinder structures, in order to determine whether these noises are abnormal.
Thank you to the teachers for their replies; there has been no cracking, no visible deformation, and no leakage. Since such situations occur occasionally and not in every container, it is fine to continue applying pressure.
Noise during hydrostatic testing usually occurs under two conditions. The first is when the diameter of the thin plate is large, as excessive deformation during pressurization can result in noise. The second condition is high pressure; under such conditions, internal issues may arise in the fillet weld area, leading to noise. It is recommended to conduct ultrasonic testing on the fillet weld areas, especially where the pipes meet the cylinder.
There is a deviation in the container’s molding dimensions! Such as roundness, etc.!

If there is no obvious deformation on the outside of the container, it is certain that there has been some deformation or breakage in its internal components.
Thank you to the teachers for their replies. We work with pressure vessels, so such situations are common; we can encounter all kinds of problems. Generally, such devices have many connections, and when water is added for pressure testing, it’s not possible to fill water in every connection. As some teachers have mentioned, issues such as deformation or cracking – we have been manufacturing pressure vessels for 30 years and have never encountered such problems during pressure tests; stress release is definitely a factor at play.
According to the regulations, no abnormal noises should occur during a hydraulic test. For safety reasons, if such noises do appear, the pressure must be released immediately and the cause identified; it is not acceptable to continue applying pressure despite this. :Lol, it might be a problem with the local structure; one needs to start by examining the location where the sound is produced and consider the specific structure of the device to find the cause.
