I have a question regarding weld evaluation: Can the weld evaluation for a butt joint made of 20# pipe and 20II (forged) flanges be used to cover the weld joint of 20# pipes butted together? (20# pipe – No impact test was conducted for the pipe butt weld evaluation)
The weld evaluation for 20# pipe–pipe butt joints can be used to cover the evaluation of the welded joints formed by butting 20# pipes with 20II forged flanges. However, it should be noted that since no impact test was conducted on the 20# pipe-to-pipe butt weld evaluation, it may not fully cover the special properties of 20II forgings. Therefore, in practical applications, it is recommended to conduct additional evaluations or impact tests to ensure the quality and reliability of the welded joints. This helps to better meet relevant standards and requirements, ensuring the safety and reliability of welded joints. .
Are impact tests required for 20 and 20 forgings? Whether an impact test is conducted or not has an effect on the thickness range that can be covered by the weld qualification procedure. If you use impact energy to cover areas where no impact energy is required, there is no problem as long as the thickness coverage is sufficient. However, if you try to use impact energy to cover areas where it isn’t necessary, a new pre-welding process qualification is required, along with an additional impact test, in order to cover those areas.
20II forgings are impact-resistant depending on the material used, while 20# seamless pipes (GB/T8163) are not impact-resistant. For the joints formed by joining these two types of materials together, is it necessary to take impact into consideration? Where can I find clear guidelines on this?
