Hello, everyone. Recently I came across a heat exchanger with a fixed tube sheet design, used for cooling the vapor at the top of a distillation tower. The fluid in question flows through the tubes, while the cooling water flows through the shell; during the cooling process, half of this fluid condenses into a liquid state. The heat exchanger is horizontal, with fluid entering and exiting horizontally. Is there a risk of liquid accumulation, or does the airflow carry away the condensed liquid directly? The lower part is about 500 mm high below the pipe opening. Is it better to use the pipe outlet arrangement shown in the figure below?

There will definitely be liquid accumulation during startup and shutdown; adding a drain valve is acceptable in that case. But what about during operation?

I believe that even if it does not affect heat transfer, this design should not be used when the condensate can be carried away by the airflow; it is a basic principle to arrange the pipes in such a way that condensation can occur naturally, with them installed at an inclined angle.
