When the shell diameter is the same, why does a floating-head heat exchanger have fewer tubes compared to a fixed-tube-sheet heat exchanger?
For a piping constraint circle, the outer dimensions of the two tube sheets in a fixed-tube-sheet heat exchanger are identical. In a floating-head type heat exchanger, the size of the floating tube sheet is smaller, and consequently the piping constraint circle is also smaller; thus, with the same piping arrangement, there are fewer tubes in a floating-head design.
