As requested by our senior colleagues in the company, the shell-side inlet and outlet pipe diameters are DN550 and DN500 respectively. The heat exchanger manufacturer called today, saying that the pipe diameters are too large, which leads to a reduced number of pipes and thus an actual heat exchange area that is smaller than that of a standard heat exchanger (400). I have only heard that if the pipe diameter is too large, measures such as additional reinforcement are needed. I’m not sure whether this would result in a reduction in the heat exchange area; if so, to what extent would the impact be? I hope you can kindly offer your guidance. :handshake

The DN550 fittings are not commonly used
Pipes with DN550 diameter are quite rare. A larger pipe diameter requires a greater flow area, which means that fewer pipes can be used for the same diameter – that’s probably what it means
This heat exchanger is equipped with anti-impact baffles. The distance between these baffles and the openings depends on the diameter of those openings; larger openings require a greater distance, which in turn takes up some of the space intended for the heat exchange tubes, resulting in a reduction in the number of such tubes.
If the pressure drop at the inlet is not significant, it can be smaller; a reduction in diameter can be applied at the outlet, with larger diameters for the inlet and outlet pipes.
It is mainly due to the requirements regarding the flow area specified in GB/T151-2014, which has an impact on the arrangement of the heat exchange tubes
