Many oil refining companies have already adopted this type of heat exchanger in applications such as hydrocracking and reforming units. Will the widespread use of coil tube heat exchangers replace plate heat exchangers and spiral wound heat exchangers?
No, different types of heat exchangers are designed for different operating conditions. For example, the operating conditions of coil-type heat exchangers require cleanliness, the gas phase to not contain any entrained materials, and they present difficulties in maintenance and cleaning. Therefore, the adoption of coiled tubular heat exchangers will not replace plate heat exchangers and spiral wound heat exchangers.
However, the heat exchange area of coil-type exchangers is much larger than that of conventional shell-and-tube exchangers. Yet, for devices with the same heat exchange area, coil-type exchangers have a smaller diameter, occupy less space, and experience less loss due to pipes, valves, and other components compared to shell-and-tube exchangers. Therefore, I believe that coil-type exchangers represent a trend in development at present.

Coiled tube heat exchangers have become increasingly common in China in recent years, but they will not replace other types of heat exchangers, as customers consider their actual operating conditions when choosing a heat exchanger depending on their application area; In fact, this type of heat exchanger is no longer something new; several forward-thinking manufacturers such as Rhode Steel began researching and supplying stainless steel coils to foreign manufacturers of coil-type heat exchangers several years ago. To date, however, there has been no significant increase in demand from the foreign market. On the contrary, demand in the domestic market has been rising over the past few years. Nevertheless, an increase in demand is always a good thing, and increased competition is expected to contribute to improvements in the performance of such heat exchangers.
