Dear all: In the design of shell-and-tube heat exchangers, when a relatively large pressure difference between the tube side and the shell side exists (2.5–4 times), should one consider installing rupture discs and safety pressure relief valves on the low-pressure side? Are there specific requirements in the standards regarding what pressure difference is necessary for use? Thank you for the advice
1.5 For pressure-bearing equipment such as heat exchangers, if there is a risk that the high-temperature medium could leak into the low-temperature medium and generate vapor, a rupture disc safety device should be installed on the side of the low-temperature area.
The so-called low-pressure side should simply refer to the upstream and downstream sections of the pipelines or the equipment itself; it’s not necessarily necessary to install anything there… because the design pressure might be much higher than the pressure that results from mixing under pressure

Installation is usually done to protect against situations where external fires cause the contents inside to heat up and vaporize. That’s the difference. As a result, people might mistakenly think that installation is absolutely necessary, forgetting the reasons why it isn’t always required
