May I ask whether a spiral-wound tubular heat exchanger can be used as a top condenser in a distillation column? If not, why? For the same heat transfer medium, is the heat transfer coefficient of coiled tubes much higher than that of shell-and-tube exchangers?
Indeed, under the same conditions, the heat transfer coefficient of coiled tubes is higher than that of shell-and-tube exchangers; this applies specifically to condensation processes, where the heat transfer coefficient is very high, but it is not that high for cooling purposes
I haven’t worked with phase change furnaces, but I can answer the second question. Leaks in floating-head heat exchangers are quite common; as the name suggests, the rear part of such exchangers is floating, and that’s why companies usually don’t construct the rear floating parts very well, which results in poor sealing. These days, a double-sealing structure is often used for the rear part
