Can stainless steel and Monel be welded together?

Welding between the two is not a problem; nickel is miscible with iron, copper, chromium, etc., so nickel-based welding materials are suitable.

This post was last edited by nj1952 on 2017-7-15 at 12:36. 1. Some people have conducted welding tests on austenitic stainless steels and nickel alloys using TIG welding. Seven types of TIG welding tubular wires were tested, and the results showed that the tubular wires contained 60% nickel by mass and about 30% molybdenum by mass; they contained no tungsten, which was optimal for preventing crack formation. The test recommended the following three types of tubular welding wires (with a Cr20Ni80 coating): (1) The composition (by mass percentage) of the tubular welding wire is Cr10%–12%, Ni60%–58%, and Mo30%. (2) The composition (by mass fraction) of the tubular welding wire is Cr 10%～12%, Ni 65%～63%, and Mo 25%. (3) The composition (by mass percentage) of the tubular welding wire is Cr 12%–15%, Ni 68%–65%, and Mo 20%. 2. After investigation, there are currently no nickel-chromium-molybdenum tubular welding wires available in China. The approach to solving this issue is: (1) Among GB/T 15620-2008 \"Welding wires for nickel and nickel alloys\" and GB/T 13814-2008 \"Welding electrodes for nickel and nickel alloys\", select welding materials with compositions similar to those of the aforementioned nickel-chromium-molybdenum tubular welding wires. (2) Conduct welding procedure qualification in accordance with NB/T 47014-2011 \"Welding Procedure Qualification for Pressure Equipment\". (3) Based on the results of the process evaluation, develop welding procedure specifications for stainless steel and nickel alloys, and carry out the welding operations.
