Welding is a metal joining process and an important method of metal mechanical processing, widely used in industries such as sheet metal manufacturing, medical devices, petrochemicals, construction bridges, home appliances, and aerospace. Welding is a manufacturing method in which the workpieces to be joined are brought together through heating, pressure, or both, with or without the use of filler material, to achieve atomic bonding between them. Slag is an inevitable byproduct of the welding process; it refers to a hard and brittle substance that forms on top of the molten metal in the weld seam, as well as in other welding methods that produce slag. When welding precision parts, it is necessary to remove slag; otherwise, it will affect the dimensions of the parts as well as the pressure testing for leaks in the pipes, increasing the rate of defective products. Due to structural reasons and limitations in electrode length, welding joint issues may arise. Improper weld jointing can result in defects such as excessive height, sinking, separation, or uneven width at the joints. Therefore, slag must be removed from weld joints, and appropriate measures should be taken depending on the specific conditions of those weld joints. The slag generated during welding can also cause clogging of the welding nozzle, which not only wastes time on cleaning the nozzle but also affects the quality of the weld. For products that require high aesthetic standards for their welded parts, failing to remove slag can affect the appearance and quality of the product. Summary: It is still necessary to remove slag. As beginners, we often struggle with knowing how to get rid of slag completely. Based on the author’s practical experience, we can use a hand grinder, as it is an auxiliary tool frequently used by welders. It allows for quick removal of various impurities from the weld seam, is easy to use, and inexpensive – making it a cost-effective option.
