On January 13th, the upper module of the P79 FPSO project for Brazil’s **Oil Company, also constructed by CNOOC Engineering, was completed and delivered at the Qingdao International High-End Equipment Manufacturing Base. This marks the completion of all 13 modules for this project, representing another breakthrough in China’s capabilities in manufacturing high-end offshore energy equipment
FPSOs are widely used in the development of offshore oil and gas fields. Their structural design is complex, integrating functions such as oil extraction, processing, storage, and transportation, as well as accommodation for personnel and systems for production management; they represent typical examples of advanced marine equipment. The P79 FPSO has a total length of 345.3 meters and a beam width of 60 meters, with a maximum displacement of 400,000 tons, making it one of the largest FPSOs in the world. Once completed, it will be deployed at the Buzios field in Brazil’s Santos Basin, an area with operating depths exceeding 2,000 meters
CNOOC Engineering was responsible for the design, procurement, construction, and loading of the 13 core compressor modules on board. The total weight of these modules is nearly 30,000 tons, which is equivalent to more than 23,000 household cars. They consist of over 320,000 structural components, and the installation of 153 large-scale mechanical devices was also involved. The total length of the cables is 300,000 meters, enough to wrap around Beijing’s Fifth Ring Road three times
This project has high technical requirements and a massive workload; during the peak construction period, 13 modules are assembled simultaneously, with over 3,000 workers involved. It poses severe challenges in terms of construction techniques, quality management of construction processes, safety control, allocation of large-scale equipment resources, and precision control. During the project’s implementation, an integrated construction approach that combines process modules with utility tunnel modules is adopted, thereby significantly increasing the level of integration in module construction. The PCMS (Project Construction Management System) was developed independently, and various new application scenarios have been created to enable data tracking and real-time processing in stages such as construction and inspection, thus greatly enhancing the level of digital and visual construction techniques as well as project management efficiency
