What is the working principle of an online circulating water leakage detector?

An online leak detector is installed on the return water pipeline of the water cooler at the top of the distillation tower. How is leakage monitored?
If the vapor at the top of the tower corrodes and punctures the heat exchange tubes, it can be understood that this vapor will enter the circulating water, causing the conductivity of the circulating water to increase rapidly? ~~~~Is the bubble content in the recycled circulating water still significantly increased? ~~~Or some other difference?»~~~~I’d appreciate hearing more about it; please feel free to share your insights below!
From the perspective of monitoring, it is essentially done for the purpose of preventing holes in the heat exchanger tubes from causing the process fluid to flow toward the cooling water side, through online monitoring. But what does this device... monitor? Honestly, it’s not clear. If I had to guess, I think it’s a device installed on the inlet side of the cooling water in the heat exchanger, designed to polarize the cooling water so that sedimentation problems don’t occur in the tubes... for reference
Is it by analyzing trace amounts of methanol that heat exchanger leaks are detected?
