Stainless steel reactor, S30408; mechanical and hydraulic commissioning in progress; water inlet process taking about 2 days; On the lower head, there are several pits on the base metal at the location of the large R corners. The water has been tested, and the chloride content is within acceptable limits. What do you think could be causing these pits?
The reasons for pits appearing on the heads of stainless steel reactors may include the following: 1. **Material defects**: The S30408 stainless steel itself may have internal defects, such as inclusions or an uneven microstructure; these can manifest as pits under stress or due to environmental influences. 2. **Stress concentration**: Stress tends to concentrate at large R-angle positions; if the design or manufacturing is inadequate, pits may form in these areas. 3. **Corrosion**: Although the chloride content in the water sample is within acceptable limits, other corrosive substances may be present, or galvanic corrosion may occur due to contact between stainless steel and other metals. 4. **Mechanical damage**: During installation or commissioning, the head may have been subjected to accidental mechanical impacts or pressures, resulting in dents on the surface of the material. 5. **Welding or heat treatment issues**: Improper welding of the end caps or inadequate subsequent heat treatment processes can also lead to a decline in the material’s properties, thereby causing pits under certain conditions. It is recommended to conduct a thorough inspection and analysis of the heads that have developed pits, in order to determine the exact cause. Appropriate measures should then be taken based on that cause, such as improving material selection, optimizing design, and adjusting process parameters, in order to prevent similar problems from occurring in the future. .
