A gasoline tank with a capacity of 10,000 cubic meters at a refinery, of the external floating roof type. The anti-corrosion coating on this tank (the oil-immersed tank walls) has been in use for over 20 years since it was applied in 1996. These two photos were taken in 2013, after 18 years of use, and the condition of the coating is still good. There are no obvious damages on the surface, the coating is intact, and it is still in use. Some spots on the anti-corrosion layer are caused by welding work on the outer wall. The service life far exceeds the relevant regulations (CNPC requires more than 6 years). The construction materials are: an undercoat of epoxy zinc-rich primer, and a topcoat of epoxy glass flake antistatic coating. The painting was applied 5 times: 2 coats of primer and 3 coats of topcoat. The coating thickness is greater than 280 microns. The metal surface treatment is at Sa2.5 grade. Why do anti-corrosion coatings last for such a long time? This is what it means to carry out full-process management of a construction project. It is necessary to exercise good control over material procurement, plan formulation, and the selection of construction units. Quality inspections of the project are carried out at every stage; inspections during the construction process and upon completion are conducted in accordance with the established rules. Furthermore, as a manager of anti-corrosion projects, one must first be well-versed in the properties of anti-corrosion materials and the standards for metal surface treatment, possess experience in anti-corrosion work, and not be afraid of hard work. This ensures excellent project quality, as well as a long service life for the anti-corrosion coating.
Slow work yields good results; don’t set overly strict deadlines for maintenance or construction work, otherwise the quality of the work will reflect those deadlines – I know this from experience!
I’ve learned it, I’ve learned it, but it’s still too difficult to achieve full-process management – there are too many external factors involved in the management process, especially in private enterprises.
