CNPC Southwest Branch makes a key breakthrough in the research and development of water-based industrial anti-corrosion coatings

Recently, in several key performance tests of the water-based polyurethane coating developed jointly by the Southwest Branch, the adhesion strength of this coating reached 16.58 MPa to 20.81 MPa, far exceeding the requirement of ≥6 MPa specified in standard SY/T7036. Moreover, the salt spray resistance of the water-based polyurethane coating remained intact after 2000 hours – with no bubbling, rusting, cracking, or delamination – which is twice the requirement set by the standards; this represents a significant breakthrough in the research on water-based industrial anti-corrosion coatings carried out by the Southwest Branch. To overcome the technical challenges associated with water-based industrial paints in the field of heavy-duty corrosion protection, the Southwest Branch, in collaboration with Sichuan University, Chongqing University and other institutions, formed a research and development team. After numerous discussions and months of intensive work, they developed a water-based polyurethane coating system consisting of a water-based inorganic zinc-rich primer, a water-based epoxy ferrochrome intermediate coat, and a water-based polyurethane topcoat. All parameters of these coatings meet the specified standards; in particular, key performance indicators such as coating adhesion and salt spray resistance far exceed the required standards. The adhesion test, along with the successful development of this coating, provides greener protection solutions for major domestic and international projects undertaken by the branch company. It also offers technical applications and practical engineering experience for industry standard SY/T 7036 \"Technical Specifications for External Anti-corrosion Coatings of Pipelines and Equipment in Petroleum and Natural Gas Facilities\", which was developed by the Southwest Branch Company. Next, the Southwest Branch will adhere to the principle that \"technology is the foundation of the enterprise, and innovation is the source of its development.\" It will continue to promote technological innovation, providing replicable success stories through high-quality products and excellent performance to support the green transformation of the industry, and contributing its expertise to the company’s efforts to become a world-class enterprise as well as to achieving the **\"dual carbon\" goals.
