When a coating of the same or a different type is applied over a dry paint film, the underlying dried film softens, bulges, or separates from the substrate during the application or drying of the new coating (the resulting appearance is typically wrinkling). The phenomenon of \"undercutting\" that occurs during paint application refers to the penetration of strong solvents in the newly applied topcoat, which softens and dissolves the underlying paint film that has not fully dried or is incompatible with it; this results in wrinkling, peeling, bubbling of the coating, and even exposure of the substrate. The approach to handling it depends on the severity of the bottom biting and its scope of impact.
