Graphite heat exchangers are used in the petrochemical industry for heat exchange in environments requiring corrosion resistance and high temperatures; they are particularly suitable for cooling, condensing, and recovering waste heat in strong acid media such as hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid. Thanks to its excellent corrosion resistance, thermal conductivity, and chemical stability, it has found key applications in various petrochemical production processes, effectively extending the lifespan of equipment and reducing maintenance costs. 1. Waste heat recovery and energy-saving upgrades: In the distillation unit of a petrochemical plant, graphite heat exchangers were used to efficiently recover the waste heat from high-temperature process fluids, thereby significantly improving energy utilization efficiency. After the project is operational, significant savings in energy costs are achieved each year, while reliance on external cooling systems is reduced. 2. Treatment in strong acid media: Graphite heat exchangers are widely used in the production of chlor-alkali chemicals, fluorides, titanium dioxide, etc., for heating or cooling corrosive media such as hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, and acetic acid. For example, in the condensation process of acetic acid and acetic anhydride, graphite heat exchangers exhibit excellent corrosion resistance, avoiding the problems of corrosion and leakage that are common with traditional metal equipment. 3. Application of catalyst carriers in catalytic cracking units: In the Yueyang Petrochemical project, graphite materials were used as catalyst carriers in catalytic cracking units, which improved the efficiency of producing light oil products. Operational data show that the reaction temperature is more stable, and the equipment maintenance cycle has also been significantly extended. 4. Treatment of high-temperature flue gas and acidic wastewater: In the fields of metallurgy and petroleum refining, graphite heat exchangers can operate stably at temperatures below 120°C, and are used for recovering waste heat from high-temperature flue gas as well as treating acidic wastewater, thereby enabling the hierarchical utilization of energy and in line with the trends toward green chemistry. 5. Integrated use for sealing and corrosion protection: In addition to being used as a core heat exchange component, graphite is also employed in the sealing rings of pumps and valves to ensure good sealing performance in high-temperature and high-pressure environments ; At the same time, graphite coatings are also used on the inner walls of pipes and storage tanks to resist chemical erosion and reduce the frequency of maintenance. 6. Summary: Although graphite heat exchangers have many advantages, they also have limitations such as low tensile strength, tendency to crack easily, and suitability only for low-pressure environments (usually 0.3–0.5 MPa). Therefore, careful selection is required under high-pressure conditions, or structural optimization using composite materials should be employed. From a life-cycle cost perspective, although the initial investment is higher than that of stainless steel equipment, it can significantly reduce maintenance and replacement costs in highly corrosive environments, resulting in a 30%-40% reduction in the total cost of ownership over 5 years.
