Hydrofluoric acid, commonly known as \"bone-rotting acid,\" is extremely corrosive; protection measures must be implemented from multiple aspects, including material selection, operational procedures, and emergency response. I. Corrosive properties of hydrofluoric acid: A special penetration mechanism – At first contact with the skin, low-concentration hydrofluoric acid may not cause any noticeable pain; however, after a few hours, fluoride ions penetrate the skin and reach the bones, where they bind to calcium and magnesium ions in the body, leading to hypocalcemia. In severe cases, this can result in cardiac arrest, and even a burn area as small as the size of a palm can be fatal. Corrosion behavior of the material: It can severely corrode glass and silicon-containing materials; ordinary latex and PVC gloves cannot prevent its penetration, and a 1mm thick silicone glove is penetrated in just 15 seconds. II. Core protective measuresPersonal protective equipment: It is necessary to wear double-layer gloves made of fluororesistant rubber/butyl rubber, along with chemical splash-proof goggles and a full-face shield. One must also wear rubber acid- and alkali-resistant chemical protective suits. In environments with high concentrations of hazardous substances, a positive-pressure air respirator is required. Operation and storage precautions: Operations must be carried out in a fume hood under sealed conditions. Containers made of polyethylene or polytetrafluoroethylene should be used; the use of glass containers is strictly prohibited. The storage tank shall be made of corrosion-resistant materials such as Monel alloy and carbon steel; dikes and emergency shut-off valves shall be installed, and eyewash stations and shower facilities shall be provided on site. Key points for emergency treatment: Immediately remove contaminated clothing after skin contact; rinse the affected area with plenty of running water for at least 20 minutes; apply 2.5% calcium gluconate gel. If available, use hexafluorine spray. Seek medical attention promptly. It is strictly prohibited to wipe the area with a towel or to blindly neutralize the substance using alkali.
