The Methanol Division of Yangmei Guotai Xinhua Makes Every Effort to Address the High COD Level in Desalinated Water Author/Source: Yangmei Guotai Xinhua Date: 2020-11-12 Clicks: 9 From November 7th to 8th, the Heat Treatment Workshop and the Synthesis Workshop of Yangmei Guotai Xinhua’s Methanol Division worked together to resolve the issue of high COD levels in desalinated water, thereby ensuring the safe and stable operation of production processes. At noon on the 7th, an analyst in the heat treatment workshop detected that the COD level of the thermally deionized water was as high as 150 mg/cm3, which posed a safety risk. The analyst immediately reported the situation to the dispatch team and contacted the operations and production team to conduct further analysis. After discussing the matter with the relevant personnel in the synthesis workshop and comparing the sample results from the distillation condensate tank, the reboiler, and the methanol heat exchanger, it was determined that the high COD level in the deionized water was caused by the leakage of 10 kilograms of methanol from the second heat exchanger in the distillation pressure tower into the condensate system. Upon learning of the cause of the problem, the synthesis workshop organized its staff to carry out emergency repairs on the heat exchanger overnight; it closed the inlet and outlet valves of the condensate pipeline, diverted the methanol stream through a bypass line, and increased the amount of steam used for distillation pressure control, thereby ensuring that distillation operations were not affected. After overnight maintenance and debugging, the COD level in the hot desalinated water gradually decreased. Thanks to the timely detection of this safety hazard and the effective measures taken, a quality issue related to the deionized water produced in the entire plant caused by leaks in the distillation equipment was successfully avoided, thereby ensuring the safe, efficient, and stable operation of the methanol production facility.
