On December 20, Hubei Yihua issued a statement stating that it received notice from its subsidiary, Inner Mongolia Ordos United Chemical Co., Ltd., on the same day that, due to limited natural gas supply during winter, the company’s ammonia and urea production facilities would be shut down starting from December 20, 2021, for maintenance work. According to Hubei Yihua, this major maintenance task is quite extensive, involving a total of 558 items related to systems such as the ammonia synthesis system, urea production system, and boilers, of which 47 are major maintenance projects. Inner Mongolia Ordos United Chemical Co., Ltd. is a Sino-foreign joint venture with a registered capital of 1 billion yuan. It was established with investments from Hubei Yihua Chemical Co., Ltd. (holding 51%), Ordos Group (holding 21%), and the American Sigma Investment Group (holding 28%). The project uses natural gas from the Ordos Sulige Gas Field (a nationally significant gas field) as its main raw material, and is equipped with the corresponding supplies of water, electricity, and gas. Using natural gas as raw material, Ordos United Chemical has introduced two sets of ammonia synthesis and urea production facilities from South Korea’s NAMHWA CHEMICAL CORP., as well as one large-particle urea production facility from the Netherlands’ OCI. In its first phase, the company has established an industrial scale capable of producing 600,000 tons of ammonia per year and 1.04 million tons of urea per year. Construction of the project began on May 20, 2006, and it was put into operation on November 8, 2008.
