At 2:43 p.m. on December 5, when the flame detection signal for the last coal feed line in Gas Plant No. 4 was activated, all 5 gasifiers in Shaanxi Coal Group Yulin Chemical Co., Ltd.’s 1.8 million tons per year coal-based ethylene glycol production project were successfully ignited on the first attempt. According to the technical personnel on site, the gasification unit is the core component of the 180 Project; it consists of 5 gasifiers that use Collin CCG pressurized coal gasification technology to produce syngas. This process involves high technical and quality requirements, presents challenges in terms of safety management, and is characterized by high temperatures, high pressures, and toxic substances. This unit is responsible for receiving raw coal, pulverized coke, and fine coal powder; after synthesizing syngas, it is sent to the ethylene glycol plant following conversion and purification processes. Project Overview: The Shaanxi Coal Yulin Coal Quality-Based Utilization for the Production of Chemical New Materials Demonstration Project is located in the Qingshui Industrial Park in Yulin. It serves as a pilot project for exploring the modern transformation and development of the coal chemical industry within the Shaanxi Coal Group. The total area of the project is approximately 13 square kilometers, with an estimated total investment of 125 billion yuan. Donghua Technology is responsible for the EPC general contracting of dimethyl oxalate (DMO), ethylene glycol (EG), the intermediate storage areas, as well as the associated auxiliary facilities. The contract value is nearly 3.818 billion yuan, with an estimated investment in the project amounting to 26.5 billion yuan. Once completed, the project will generate an annual output value of around 9.7 billion yuan, and it will contribute approximately 740 million yuan in taxes annually to ** and the local area. It will also drive an increase in the industrial added value of related local industries by around 18 billion yuan. The construction scale of the 1.8 million tons per year ethylene glycol production facility at Yulin Chemical, belonging to Shaanxi Coal Group, is 1.8 million tons of ethylene glycol per year, and the construction is not carried out in phases. The entire plant is divided into three units; each of the units responsible for ethylene glycol synthesis and ethylene glycol distillation has a capacity of 600,000 tons per year. The system is highly integrated, resulting in significant economies of scale. The project processes approximately 24 million tons of coal per year. It comprises 27 process units along with the associated utility systems, and its output includes 15 million tons of coal subjected to medium- and low-temperature pyrolysis, 5.6 million tons of methanol, 1.8 million tons of ethylene glycol, 2 million tons of olefins, as well as downstream products derived from these intermediates. Among them, the first phase of Project 1, which involves an ethylene glycol production facility with an annual capacity of 1.8 million tons, covers an area of approximately 4.4 million square meters. The total investment required for this project is estimated at around 26.5 billion yuan. It is currently the largest coal-based ethylene glycol production facility under construction in the world, with completion scheduled for June 2021 ; Phase 1, Stage 2 involves the construction of a facility capable of producing 5.6 million tons per year of methanol and 2 million tons per year of olefins, along with related processing units; completion is scheduled by the end of 2023. Phase II of the project focuses on coal pyrolysis and is also divided into two stages. The first stage involves an industrial demonstration facility for 1.2 million tons per year of pulverized coal pyrolysis and 500,000 tons per year of advanced processing of coal tar; mechanical completion is scheduled for June 2021 ; In the second phase, the scale of pyrolysis will be increased to 15 million tons, and the coal tar industry chain will be expanded to produce aromatics as well as downstream products derived from arylenes. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2022, with all construction work to be completed by the end of 2025.
