India’s fertilizer self-sufficiency rate reaches a new high in 2025

　　According to Sinochem New Network, the Indian Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers announced recently that by 2025 the country’s self-sufficiency rate in fertilizers is expected to reach around 73%, setting a new historical high. 　　In recent years, the Indian government has taken active measures to address global uncertainties and supply chain disruption risks, such as by signing long-term supply agreements for key raw materials and pursuing strategic diversification, with the aim of ensuring fertilizer security. Official data show that domestic fertilizer production has experienced steady growth for several consecutive years. India’s total domestic production of fertilizers (including urea, diammonium phosphate, NPK compound fertilizers, and superphosphate) increased steadily from 43.3 million tons in 2021 to 52.4 million tons in 2025. The Indian Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers stated that this strong growth is attributed to various measures such as the construction of new fertilizer plants, the restart of closed facilities, efforts to promote local production, and ensuring access to raw materials; together, these efforts have enhanced the resilience, capacity, and sustainability of India’s fertilizer industry.
