I worked 6 days this week; I really long for a vacation. Wishing everyone a pleasant weekend in advance. Today, let’s talk about the layout of the furnace. Issue 11: Layout of Heating Furnaces. The layout of heating furnaces is actually quite similar to that of vertical storage tanks; the main consideration is the issue of open flames. Therefore, open-flame heating furnaces should be placed together with other open-flame equipment at the edge of the facility, near fire exits. It is also necessary to take into account the wind direction in the event of a fire caused by a leak of combustible gases. It can also be arranged in alignment with the center line, facilitating the sharing of platforms and chimneys. When arranging the heating furnace, consideration must be given to the passages for maintaining the furnace tubes, as well as the spaces and areas required for lifting them. The length of the horizontal area designated for maintaining the furnace tubes should be at least equal to the length of the tubes plus an additional two meters. For tubes with burners at the bottom, attention must be paid to the space required for the piping; a clearance of at least 2 meters is necessary as a maintenance passage. As an example, refer to the foundation shown in the image below. Additionally, consideration must be given to the space and orientation needed for lifting the furnace tubes. It is advised to the designers that lifting can actually be done in a direction perpendicular to that of the furnace tube extraction; it is not necessary to lift it in a straight line aligned with the furnace tube. Here’s a picture of the construction of the hoisted heating furnace. The steam drum of the furnace is located on or near the furnace top, while pre-treatment equipment such as the fuel gas separation tank must be placed at a distance of more than 6 meters from the furnace. Accessories of the heating furnace itself, such as blowers and exhaust fans, are installed in locations that do not interfere with the maintenance and lifting operations of the furnace itself, and they are placed as close as possible to it. Finally, there is the distance from the open-flame furnace: it should be more than 22.5 meters away from liquefied hydrocarbon equipment or Class A gas compressors that are installed outdoors; if a fire wall is placed between them, this distance can be as low as 15 meters (the wall in the compressor room, if it has no windows, can serve as such a fire wall). The height of the wall must be at least 3 meters, and the distance between the wall and the furnace should not exceed 5 meters. As for the length of the wall, I’ll illustrate it with a diagram below. My computer doesn’t have CAD, so please understand; I’ll draw a few strokes instead. That’s roughly the layout of the furnace; the more detailed aspects, such as the air damper platforms, are as follows. For the crater platforms, as long as proper operations and maintenance are taken into account, there are generally no major issues. When you mentioned the long snake formation, I remembered something: I had a project in Qinghai where the client insisted that the furnaces had to be placed in locations determined by feng shui principles. A master was brought in to examine the site for over half a month, and eventually four locations were chosen, as those spots were considered suitable for suppressing negative energies. Furnaces were then built in those four locations – heat transfer oil furnaces, two boilers, and a large heating unit. The layout design resulted in absolute chaos among everyone involved. Hehe.
