【First in the Country】China’s first offshore gas storage facility has been officially put into operation in Tangshan, Hebei!

At 13:00 on November 26, 2024, upon the issuance of the gas production command, the production valves of the gas production well at Nanbao No. 1 Gas Storage Facility, operated by the Jidong Oilfield Branch of China National Petroleum Corporation and located in the Tangshan area of the Bohai Sea, were opened. Natural gas flowed smoothly through the pipelines into the production facilities and was then delivered to the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, marking the official commissioning of China’s first offshore gas storage facility. It is understood that the Nanpu No. 1 gas storage facility is located over 3,000 meters underground on the Nanpu No. 2 artificial island in the Jidong oil field. It was converted from an oil and gas reservoir, and is used for storage during off-peak seasons and for gas supply during peak seasons, in order to meet the needs of seasonal demand regulation, emergency gas supply, and **energy strategic reserves. Designed with an effective storage capacity of 1.814 billion cubic meters and a usable gas volume of 1.052 billion cubic meters, the gas reservoir underwent pilot tests in 2021, with overall construction beginning in 2023. To continuously enhance the capacity to ensure energy and resource security, Jidong Oilfield built new two-way injection and production pipelines as well as a control room this year, enabling Gas Storage Facility No. 1 in Nanbao to meet the conditions for official operation. The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region is the area in China with the greatest demand for peak shaving and supply assurance. To the south of the Nanbao No. 1 gas storage facility, there are two LNG (liquefied natural gas) receiving stations; to the north lie the China-Russia and Yongtang-Qin pipelines, and to the east is the planned Qinfeng pipeline – making the area densely packed with natural gas transmission pipelines. It is estimated that during the heating season of 2024–2025, this gas storage facility will supply 350 million cubic meters of natural gas, providing warmth to around 3.5 million households in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. As planned, the Jidong Oil Field will also continue to work on the construction of new gas storage facilities, aiming to create a network of such facilities in order to further enhance the region’s capacity to regulate and supply natural gas in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area.
