Has anyone ever purified diethylene glycol dimethyl ether? My question is that there is still 30% water in diethylene glycol dimethyl ether, and the two substances are miscible and form an azeotrope. What specific methods can be used to remove the water so that I can obtain pure diethylene glycol dimethyl ether?
Have experiments been done to confirm the existence of an azeotrope? The information I checked shows that there is no azeotrope
Azeotropic distillation is employed, with toluene, benzene, or cyclohexane used as azeotropes; these azeotropes form mixtures with water at boiling points significantly lower than 99.8°C, and they are vaporized first. After condensation, the aqueous phase is separated in a decanter, while the azeotrope is returned to the tower as reflux for reuse. What remains at the bottom of the tower is diethyl glyme containing only trace amounts of water, at levels of a few dozen wt ppm.

Is your brother in the organic solvent recycling industry? The simple method is azeotropic distillation. However, as mentioned above, toluene and benzylcyclohexane are used as azeotropes. I would suggest that you check whether the presence of these azeotropes in your product could affect its price; some industries are quite sensitive to toluene and benzene. Benzylcyclohexane has a low water-carrying capacity, at 10 to 1, so it is also not recommended.
