“Can fire emergency lights be powered by a socket? ”——This is the most frequently asked question regarding design, construction, and even property management. 01 How exactly should standards be stated? Article 3.3.2 of the Technical Standard for Fire Emergency Lighting and Evacuation Signaling Systems GB 51309-2018: “In the input and output circuits of the emergency lighting distribution box or centralized power supply... it is strictly prohibited to connect switch devices, sockets, and other loads outside the system to the output circuits.” Article 13.7.15-8 of the \"Code for Electrical Design of Civil Buildings\" GB 51348-2019: \"It is strictly prohibited to connect sockets to the branch circuits that supply power to emergency lighting fixtures.\" Article 4.5.6 of the General Code for Building Electrical and Intelligent Systems GB 55024-2022 states: “Fire emergency lighting circuits must not be connected to……power sockets or other loads.” The only remaining exception regarding plugs and sockets (and strict conditions must be met) is stipulated in Article 4.5.5 of GB 51309-2018: “In non-centralized control systems, when lights with built-in power sources are connected using plugs, special tools shall be used to remove them.” Explanation of Article 3.6 in \"Analysis of Difficult Issues in Fire Protection Design Review for Construction Projects in Guangdong Province\": If such specialized socket products are not available on the market, it should be connected directly to the power supply; connection through ordinary sockets is strictly prohibited. 02 The main reason for disabling sockets: reliability risks. Ordinary sockets can cause power outages due to poor contacts or improper operation of residual current protection devices, failing to meet the requirement that emergency lighting must be activated within 0.25 seconds. Risk of human interference: The sockets may be plugged in or pulled out by unqualified personnel or stolen, affecting their emergency functionality in case of a fire. Maintenance and detection flaws: The way sockets are connected does not meet the detection standards required throughout the lifetime of fire protection systems, which may conceal wiring issues.

 03 What to do on site? ✅ New project – all sockets are to be removed; lights are to be connected directly to the emergency lighting distribution box or a central power source. ✅ Renovation of old projects – unplugging and replugging connectors, replacing terminals, and going through the approval process again. ✅ Temporary scenarios – if a plug is necessary, a tamper-proof socket that can only be removed with special tools must be used, and written approval from the fire department must be obtained in advance. Finally, stop asking if it can be used with a socket!
