Recently, I have been reviewing information on existing characterization methods. From my research of the literature, it appears that there are essentially two ways to characterize crude oil: one is through the use of virtual components, which is the most common method; the other is through the use of actual components, but this approach also requires data such as the actual boiling point curve. The advantage of this method is its simplicity and ease of use, allowing for the rapid characterization of crude oil without needing to know its actual compositional makeup. However, its drawback is that the compounds represented by the virtual components are not true components, and errors may arise under certain conditions. The true component method involves separating and determining the various actual components present in crude oil, and characterizing it based on the properties and proportions of these components. The advantage of this method is its higher accuracy, as it can reflect the actual components present in crude oil, as well as their properties and proportions. However, its disadvantages are also obvious: it requires a large number of laboratory tests and data processing tasks, which is time-consuming and labor-intensive, and it also demands certain experience from the testers. In short, the specific method to be used needs to be determined based on the actual circumstances. If a rapid assessment of crude oil properties is required, the virtual component method is the preferred approach ; If a more accurate understanding of crude oil components and properties is required, the true component method is more appropriate. .
