For 1 million tons of coal-based methanol production, a protection bed reactor is installed before the inlet of the synthesis tower; its main component is unoxidized zinc, and it is equipped with a high-pressure deoxygenation water pipeline. I would like to ask the experienced members of this forum: does anyone know the original purpose of this design? Is its function merely to remove sulfur? Does it have the effect of adjusting the hydrogen-to-carbon ratio?
A protection bed is installed in front of the methanol synthesis tower primarily to remove impurities from the reactant gas, usually catalyst poisons such as sulfides, in order to prevent damage to the catalysts used in subsequent methanol synthesis. Zinc oxide in the protection bed is used to adsorb and convert these sulfides. The addition of a high-pressure deoxygenation water line is usually intended to provide pure water, reduce the oxygen content in the water, and prevent the formation of oxides throughout the reaction process, which could cause damage to the equipment and catalysts. The main function of the protection bed is to remove impurities rather than adjust the hydrogen-to-carbon ratio. The adjustment of the hydrogen-to-carbon ratio is usually achieved by modifying the gas composition during the raw gas preparation stage. .
