What are buildings, and what are structures? What is the difference between them? In engineering practice, buildings and structures are common terms that appear frequently, but many professionals in this field confuse the two. Although both belong to engineering entities, their core differences lie in their functional purposes and application scenarios; understanding the key logic allows for quick differentiation between them. The essential difference between the two lies in \"whether it is available for human activity.\" A building refers to an engineered structure used by people for social activities such as production, daily life, work, study, and more. Its key characteristics are a complete enclosure consisting of walls, roofs, doors, and windows, as well as usable space, which enables people to stay there for extended periods and carry out various activities related to production and daily life. Structures refer to physical entities constructed to fulfill engineering functions such as bearing loads, transporting materials, providing protection, or storing items. Their key characteristic is that they are not intended for long-term human residence or social activities; their design focuses on fulfilling specific functions, and they do not require a complete living space. Common buildings in daily life can be classified into three main categories: residential buildings, industrial buildings, and public buildings. (1) In terms of civil buildings, common ones include residences, office buildings, shopping malls, schools, hospitals, hotels, stadiums, and theaters ; (2) Industrial buildings such as production plants, warehouses (for operational management), and workshop office buildings ; (3) Public buildings include libraries, convention centers, passenger stations, and airport terminals. Common structures, such as bridges, tunnels, and toll booth canopies ; Water towers, chimneys, reservoirs, sewage treatment tanks, septic tanks, waste transfer stations ; Retaining walls, slope protections, dams, cofferdams, retaining structures ; Transmission towers, communication towers, and so on. Simply put, something that can accommodate people, allow them to stay there, and enable specific activities is most likely a building ; A structure that serves only to support, convey, protect, or facilitate production, and in which no one stays for an extended period of time, is known as a construction. The differences between the two are shown in the table below. In summary, two tips can be identified for quickly distinguishing between buildings and structures: (1) First, consider their “function” – whether their primary purpose is to serve as a place for long-term human activity. If so, it is a building ; If not, then it is a structure. (2) Check again whether the structure has enclosed or semi-enclosed spaces for use, such as rooms or halls? Yes, it’s buildings ; If not, it is a structure. Some special scenarios, such as underground garages and equipment rooms, are primarily functional in nature, but since they have a complete enclosed space for human operation and management, they are still classified as buildings.
