Comparison of selection technologies for shielded pumps and magnetic pumps in MDI plants: In MDI (diphenylmethane diisocyanate) production plants, due to the highly toxic nature of the material, its tendency to polymerize, extreme sensitivity to moisture, and high temperatures, extremely strict requirements are placed on the sealing performance of the pumps. As typical \"sealless pumps,\" canned motor pumps and magnetic drive pumps are the core equipment in MDI plants. 1. Comparison of core structure and working principle: Feature – Canned Motor Pump, Magnetic Drive Pump. Driving mechanism: The motor and the pump are coaxial, with a shielding sleeve separating the stator from the rotor. The standard motor drives the internal magnetic rotor through a magnetic coupling. The sealing structure features static sealing (shielding sleeve), with absolutely no shaft seal. Static sealing (isolating sleeve), with absolutely no shaft seal. The cooling method relies on a circulating medium to cool the motor (internal circulation). The magnets are usually cooled by a medium, and the motor is equipped with a separate fan. It has a compact volume and weight structure, being small in size and light in weight. Heavier, includes a standard motor and a magnetic coupling mechanism. No alignment is required; there is no issue with coupling alignment. It is necessary to regularly check the alignment of the motor and the pump head. 2. Analysis of advantages and disadvantages of canned pumps under MDI conditions: Compact design and exceptional safety – few leakage points: Canned pumps lack external couplings and bearing housings, resulting in a very simple structure and, in theory, the lowest risk of leakage. High pressure resistance: The shielding sleeve is generally able to withstand higher system pressures than the isolation sleeve of magnetic pumps. Noise and vibration: It operates extremely quietly, making it suitable for workshops with high environmental requirements. Disadvantages: High maintenance difficulty: Once the motor burns out or the shielding cover is damaged, it is usually necessary to send it back to the factory or replace the internal components entirely. Temperature sensitivity: MDI tends to polymerize at high temperatures. The heat from the shielded pump motor is transferred directly to the medium; if circulation is poor, there is a higher risk of coking/agglomeration of the medium inside the pump. Magnetic pump: Flexible and easy to maintain. Advantage: Motor versatility – standard motors are used, and if one fails, it can be replaced easily without affecting the pump head. Good thermal isolation: The heat generated by the motor does not enter the medium directly, which makes temperature control relatively easier for materials like MDI that are sensitive to heat and polymerization. Easy monitoring: Temperature and vibration sensors can be easily installed to monitor the operating condition of the magnets. Disadvantages: Risk of magnetic misalignment: If pressure fluctuations are severe or overload occurs, the magnetic coupling may \"disengage\" (experience misalignment). Demagnetization of magnets: Under high-temperature conditions in MDI, if cooling is inadequate, there is a risk of demagnetization of permanent magnets (it is necessary to use magnets designed for high temperatures). 3. Key performance comparison in terms of safety: Shielded pumps have a slight advantage. Shielded pumps are typically equipped with a second layer of protection (the stator casing), so that even if the shielding sleeve ruptures, the medium will not burst out immediately. Efficiency: Magnetic pump efficiency is generally lower than that of conventional centrifugal pumps due to magnetic eddy current losses, while canned pump efficiency is lower owing to electromagnetic losses associated with the shielding casing; however, canned pumps have slightly higher efficiency under low-flow conditions. Maintenance cost: Magnetic pumps have an advantage. Since the motor and the pump are separate, maintenance is as simple as building with blocks. A shielded pump is like a “black box”; when it breaks down, repairs often require complex procedures. 4. Summary and recommendations: If your operating conditions are as follows: limited space, absolutely no tolerance for leaks, and extremely high system pressure. Recommended choice: canned pump. If your application requirements are: easy maintenance in the long term, materials that are extremely sensitive to temperature, or the use of standard motors to reduce spare parts costs. Recommended choice: magnetic pump. In MDI plants, the current prevailing trend is that canned pumps are widely used in the core reaction zones (which involve high pressure and high risks) ; Magnetic pumps are commonly used for utility services or loading of finished products (due to high maintenance frequency).
