I recently encountered a problem while working on a gas pressurization design. The requirement is that the pressurized gas should be at less than 1 MPa, the device should have a simple structure, and the temperature of the gas after pressurization should not be too high; it is preferable to maintain a constant temperature. I would like to use a water ring vacuum pump system to compress gas, and the gas to be compressed is sulfur dioxide. Is this approach feasible? Besides using compressors to increase gas pressure in industry, what other mature and widely used devices are there? The requirement is that the pressure of the gas after pressurization should be below 1 MPa. Is there a minimum pressure requirement? Water ring pumps can achieve very low outlet pressures, namely only slightly positive pressure.
For a water ring system, your pressure increase is a bit high; in such cases, piston or screw types are generally chosen. Can’t you solve the temperature problem by adding a heat exchanger behind it?
Some literature indicates that it can be used for pressurization as a gas, but it is true that the pressure is not high; however, it can be used for pressurization in isothermal processes.
I’ve seen some process flow diagrams that use this device for pressurizing sulfur dioxide, and I’m not sure whether that is reasonable; its advantage lies in pressurizing flammable and explosive gases.
The illustrations look quite sophisticated, but the ideas don’t seem very good. How much pressure can a water-ring vacuum pump increase? Since liquid ring compressors use water as the working fluid, it should be quite difficult to address corrosion issues. If the flow rate is not high, a diaphragm compressor can be used
