Over the past 31 years, tremendous changes have taken place in the fields of knowledge related to flame propagation and flame arrestor technology. The industrial and **security sectors have requested that standard-setting organizations working in the field of fire safety develop standards with defined parameters to classify fire dampers. These organizations include: BSI: British Standards Institution; CEN: European Committee for Standardization; CSA: Canadian Standards Association; FM: Factory Mutual Insurance Company; IMO: International Maritime Organization; PTB: German Institute of Technology; UL: Underwriters Laboratories; USCG: United States Coast Guard. Each of these organizations has established testing guidelines for flame arrestor testing. There are differences in test parameters, test repeatability, and test facilities, and the guidelines vary among different organizations. It varies depending on the specific application. The required tests vary. The explosion and fire protection requirements for process applications are not the same as those for venting applications on gasoline tanks, and the tests required are also different. The organizations responsible for establishing standards and conducting tests for flame arrestors are not limited to Europe alone; it is paranoid and irresponsible to blindly emphasize and recommend a set of testing guidelines that covers all possible application scenarios. For different use cases, we recommend that users conduct tests in accordance with the relevant specific testing guidelines, as this is a more rigorous approach.
