I have a question for everyone: In ammonia refrigeration systems, the liquid ammonia contains a relatively small amount of water, around 1%, so will the water in the liquid ammonia freeze at around minus 30 degrees Celsius? The boiling point of liquid ammonia is -33.4°C, and its freezing point is -77.7°C. Liquid ammonia and water are mutually soluble.
Won’t it precipitate? Saltwater freezes at temperatures lower than zero, not to mention liquid ammonia
What do you mean? Will the water in liquid ammonia freeze? First of all, if the liquid ammonia is at normal pressure, the temperature must be below -33 degrees; there’s no such thing as 0 degrees in that case. Or are you asking whether the water in liquid ammonia will freeze at 0 degrees under high pressure? But the freezing point of water under high pressure is not 0 degrees, right?
Ammonia water has a very low freezing point depending on its concentration; it does not freeze at 0 degrees. As far as I remember, 20% ammonia water freezes around -10 degrees. The water content in liquid ammonia is even lower; you can check the charts showing the freezing points of ammonia water
This question is the same as asking whether water in saltwater freezes at zero degrees; it doesn’t freeze
Ammonia water is not water; its physical and chemical properties are completely different from those of water, so it certainly will not freeze at temperatures below 0 degrees, just like water does.
