Gentle experts, I’ve asked many people and searched through a lot of information, but I still don’t understand it. Perhaps it’s because there are no schematic diagrams, which makes it difficult for me to imagine what horizontal displacement of the pipes looks like. I understand axial displacement, but what does lateral displacement mean? Does it refer to the tube becoming thicker or thinner? Why is compensation needed for this? What are the consequences of not providing compensation? It seems to me that for thermal expansion and contraction of pipes, it’s only necessary to compensate for changes in length; how then can we account for changes in diameter? Expansion joints are elastic components – so how can they compensate for the effects caused by changes in pipe diameter?

I had always thought of lateral displacement as a thickening or thinning that was perpendicular to the axial direction; I never understood what needed to be compensated for due to such thickening or thinning, nor how expansion joints compensate for it. Now it makes perfect sense to me
