I have a question for everyone: For Class C and Class D buildings, according to the building fire protection codes, a fire resistance rating of level 3 or 4 is sufficient. Then why is it that in structural design, a fire resistance rating of level 2 is usually adopted? What is the reason for this?

The building classification for factories or warehouses in categories C, D, and E can be grade 3 or grade 4. However, there are strict requirements regarding the allowable floor area and number of floors for these grades. For factories in category C, if they are classified as grade 3, they can have only 2 floors; for factories in categories D and E, the maximum number of floors at grade 3 is 3. As for warehouses in category C, those classified as grade 3 can either be single-story or, in some cases, three-story buildings. Warehouses in categories D and E can have up to 3 floors at grade 3. Therefore, in order to increase the building’s floor area or number of floors, it is necessary to raise the fire resistance rating of the building accordingly.
