Are plastic PE tanks now permitted for storing 30% hydrogen peroxide according to the regulations? If that doesn’t work, what material should be used? Safety is the main consideration
It’s allowed; hydrogen peroxide is available in PP bottles, so containers are definitely fine
In small quantities, in blue PE barrels, 30 kg per barrel. They are mostly housed in 304 stainless steel or fiberglass; it’s not clear whether fiberglass has an inner lining.
PE materials have resistance to various organic solvents and to corrosion by various acids and bases, but they lack resistance to oxidative acids. Hydrogen peroxide, also known as H2O2, is a strong oxidizing agent; therefore, it cannot be used as a storage tank for hydrogen peroxide. Typically, storage tanks for hydrogen peroxide are made of high-quality stainless steel, such as 304L or the high-alloy steel 06Cr19Ni10!
The chemical name for hydrogen peroxide is peroxides; it is another hydroxide of hydrogen besides water. Its viscosity is slightly higher than that of water, and its chemical properties are unstable; it is generally stored in the form of 30% or 60% aqueous solutions. Hydrogen peroxide has strong oxidizing properties and is weakly acidic. According to GB1616-2003 \"Industrial Hydrogen Peroxide\", storage in dark-colored polyethylene tanks is required for solutions with a mass fraction of 50% or less, while tanks made of passivated stainless steel are used for solutions with a mass fraction of 70%.
Stainless steel is an ideal container for storing hydrogen peroxide – downside: high cost; Advantages: Value preservation. Fiberglass is an inexpensive storage container – drawback: short service life ; Advantages: Low cost; a specialized resin lining is required. PE material is a relatively good storage container—disadvantage: it is not suitable for making large storage tanks. Advantages: Good stability.
