Generally speaking, the timing and frequency of lawn mowing are related to the growth and development of the lawn, as well as to the type of lawn and the application of fertilizer. Cool-season lawn grasses have two growth peaks, in spring and autumn. During these peaks, pruning should be intensified, while in late autumn pruning should be reduced gradually to ensure that the grass has sufficient nutrients to survive the winter. Warm-season turf grasses reach their peak growth only in the summer, so it is necessary to increase the frequency of mowing during that season. This rule states that each time you mow, the amount cut off should not exceed 1/3 of the natural height of the lawn grass (its height before mowing). The grass is too tall to be cut to the standard height in one go; instead, the number of cuts should be increased at regular intervals over time, gradually bringing it down to the desired height. For example, if the grass has grown to 6 cm while the desired length is 2 cm, we shouldn’t reduce it by 4 cm at once; instead, following the 1/3 rule, we should first cut it back by 2 cm and then gradually reduce it further to 2 cm in several steps. These pests feed using their chewing mouthparts, gnawing away at the leaf flesh and leaving only the veins, or even eating the entire leaf. 2) Piercing-sucking pests: scale insects, aphids, whiteflies, thrips, leafhoppers, stink bugs, etc. They use their needle-like piercing-sucking mouthparts to penetrate the tissues of plants, sucking out sap; this often causes the plant’s leaves to curl, or spots to appear on the leaves, as well as yellowing. In some cases, the local tissue is stimulated, leading to cell proliferation and the formation of galls. 3) Boring pests: mainly include longhorn beetles, jewel beetles, and wood-boring moths. It feeds on the branches and stems of flowering plants, creating holes or tunnels that directly affect the growth of the main trunk and branches. 4) Soil pests: Common ones include cutworms, grubs, wireworms, and mole crickets. It mainly damages roots and rhizomes in the soil. In addition to regular landscaping maintenance and early detection and treatment of pests that affect the plants, necessary chemical treatments are also essential from March to November. Specialized pesticides can be used for this purpose, and they are much more effective against plant pests than ordinary household insecticides.
