In a document, there are three different terms regarding the density of activated carbon: 1) bulk density, 2) apparent density, and 3) packed density. I would like to ask those who are experts whether you know exactly how these three densities are defined. Thank you
Without knowing the exact definition, I guess there are several states: one is the state in which goods are piled up, with the loosest arrangement and lowest density. Second is the state after loading and compaction; there is a definition for compaction density, whose value is approximately 0.3–0.5 times the density of the material. There’s also the material density of the substance
The commonly used one is bulk density, also known as packed density. It is the activated carbon that is placed in the adsorption tank; since granular form has gaps between its particles compared to powdered form, their bulk densities are different. For granular form, a density of 0.5 g/cm3 is commonly used, while for powdered form, 0.4 g/cm3 is typical. The adsorption rate is usually 10% of the weight of the activated carbon; these values are used to design the activated carbon adsorption tanks, determine the amount of activated carbon to be used at once, and decide on the frequency of replacing it.
Apparent density refers to the density measured of an activated carbon particle, while true density is the density after accounting for the gaps within that individual particle as well
